Gender Equity Planning: Inserting Women into Local Economic DevelopmentDepartment of Urban Planning, School of Public Policy and Social Research, University of California, Los Angeles. Although economic disparities persist between men and women, women's issues in the context of U.S. local economic development planning have received relatively little attention by scholars and practicing planners. Market forces and existing local economic development practices can reduce, but not eliminate, these disparities in economic status. Local interventions are needed to effect greater economic equality between the sexes, particularly in light of changes in national policy and the devolution of spending priorities from the federal government to states and localities.
